Dr. Thompson
As far back as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a teacher. In fact, I used to line my dolls up in my treehouse to “have class.” I took the first steps to living my dream when I began tutoring students for the Alabama High School Graduation Exam during my senior year of high school. It felt good to have some spending money in my pocket, but it felt even better to watch my classmates walk across the stage and get their diplomas, knowing I had some small role in that.
I graduated from The University of Alabama with a double major in English and Secondary Education in 2006. I received my Master of Arts in Teaching from The University of West Alabama in 2009. I married my husband, Eric, in 2011. Not long after the birth of my daughter, Elizabeth, I received my Ed.S. in Teacher Leadership from The University of West Alabama in May of 2015.
Over the years, I have been blessed to work in a school with colleagues and leaders who support one another. With amazing role models and administrative support, I have become a Lead Teacher, mentor, and valuable asset to my school. I am delighted to serve as Grade Level Chairperson and on various school and district committees.
As Lead Teacher at my school, I collaborate with all teachers to make each FMS honors day a success and work with all stakeholders to make sure that we meet the goals of our school improvement plan each year. In addition to my school responsibilities, I am a member of professional organizations such as the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, and AEA. I completed my Ed.D. at The University of West Alabama in May 2021. I also received my Class A Instructional Leadership Certificate from The University of West Alabama's Master of Education program in May 2022. I want to do as much as I can in the field of education and I want to have a positive impact on the teachers and students of FMS for years to come.
One day, I would like to achieve National Board Certification. I may also be interested in transitioning to an administrative position such as a principal, assistant principal, or even a central office supervisor. I was voted Teacher of the Year by my colleagues at FMS in 2009, 2013, 2020, and 2021. I was selected as the Fayette County Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2020.
When I am not at work, I enjoy every second with my daughter, who is my favorite student and my greatest achievement. My husband Eric recently passed away in August 2023 after fighting a very rare type of soft tissue sarcoma cancer since 2017. Therefore, I ask for your patience and grace as the new school year starts.
I love to read novels and write various things of my own, such as stories and poems. I like to spend time outdoors hunting and fishing with my family or in the kitchen preparing homemade meals for family gatherings.
I believe that learning is a lifelong journey... and I still believe I have a lot to learn! As Loretta Lynn once said, "You've got to continue to grow, or you're just like last night's cornbread - stale and dry."
